NEWS ALERT: The Royals Use Sugared Almonds Too!

If you ever attended a wedding back in the 90’s, whether you were an adult or kid running around on the dancefloor, you will remember those little tooth-breakers called sugared almonds (“confetti” in Italian, or “koufeta” in Greek) that were given as bomboniere.

And if you’ve really paid attention you’ve probably also noticed there are always 5 sugared almonds in each bomboniere. Is there a reason for this or is it coincidence? What some people don’t know is that there is a meaning behind why 5 sugared almonds are given, and each one symbolises something meaningful for the newlyweds.

But firstly, bomboniere are the bride and groom’s way to say “thank you”, and to show their appreciation to all the guests who have come to celebrate their marriage. A fun fact; sugared almonds date back to centuries ago, and originated in Italy during the Roman times where they were used as sweet gifts at weddings and births by the royals and the wealthy.

It is also said the bitterness of the almonds represents the difficulties of marriage, whilst the sugar coating signifies the positive side, and that married life will be more sweet than bitter. So why 5 sugared almonds? 5 is an uneven number which means it cannot be divided. This symbolises the strong bond between the newlyweds and that nothing will ever be able to break or divide them.

5 are also given as bomboniere for other special occasions such as christenings, communions and confirmations, again because giving an even number is unlucky.

Each of the 5 almonds represent a wish for the couple throughout their life as husband and wife, and they are: Health, Wealth, Happiness, Fertility and Long Life. Therefore when you take home your bomboniere at the end of the celebration you can enjoy these sweet treats on behalf of the newlyweds!

Now, we also know there is a stigma attached to sugared almonds being that they are hard, teeth breaking and in short, unappealing. Our traditional sugared almonds are anything but all of the above! For starters, ours have a thin sugar coating, meaning you can actually bite into them! Inside is a premium quality almond, and because the sugar coating is thinner than non-SAB sugared almonds, it makes them more delicious all-round.

However if you are wanting to keep to tradition but ramp it up with something more modern and fun, we have our flavoured sugared almond collection to explore and choose from a wide variety of delicious flavours – far from your traditional sugared almonds!

Either way, we have something for every request and special occasion. Reach out to discuss your bomboniere needs, we’d love to be part of your celebration!

With sweet love
