Attended a wedding back in the 90’s?
If you attended a wedding back in the 90s, whether you were an adult or a kid running around on the dancefloor, you will remember those little tooth-breakers called sugared almonds (“confetti” in Italian, or “koufeta” in Greek) that hosts gave as bomboniere
And if you’ve really paid attention, you’ve probably also noticed that hosts always place 5 sugared almonds in each bomboniere. Is there a reason for this or is it coincidence?
What some people don’t know is that there is a meaning behind why 5 are given, and each one symbolises something meaningful for the newlyweds.
But firstly, bomboniere are the bride and groom’s way to say “thank you”, and to show their appreciation to all the guests who have come to celebrate their marriage. A fun fact: sugared almonds date back centuries ago, originating in Italy during Roman times when royals and the wealthy used them as sweet gifts at weddings and births.
Why 5 Sugared Almonds?
Some say that the bitterness of the almonds represents the difficulties of marriage, while the sugar coating signifies the positive side, suggesting that married life will be sweeter than bitter. So why 5 sugared almonds? The number 5 is uneven and cannot be divided. This symbolises the strong bond between the newlyweds and that nothing will ever be able to break or divide them.
People also choose to give 5 as bomboniere for other special occasions. Including christenings, communions, and confirmations, again because they consider giving an even number to be unlucky.
Each of the 5 almonds represent a wish for the couple throughout their life as husband and wife. Including: Health, Wealth, Happiness, Fertility and Long Life. Therefore, when you take your bomboniere home after the celebration, you can enjoy these sweet treats!
Tooth Breakers or Not?
Now, we also know that sugared almonds carry a stigma because people consider them hard, teeth-breaking, and, in short, unappealing. Our traditional sugared almonds are anything but all of the above! For starters, ours have a thin sugar coating, meaning you can actually bite into them! Inside our sugared almonds is a premium almond, with a thinner sugar coating that enhances their overall deliciousness.
However if you are wanting to keep to tradition but ramp it up with something more modern and fun, we have our flavoured sugared almond collection to explore and choose from a wide variety of delicious flavours – far from your traditional sugared almonds!
Either way, we have something for every request and special occasion. Reach out to discuss your bomboniere needs, we’d love to be part of your celebration!
